Fish freshwater this festive season

If you think catching a big barra or sizeable saratoga would make
your holidays all the more jolly, then place purchasing a stocked
impoundment permit at the top of your Christmas wish list.

Many of the Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme (SIPS) dams
throughout the state are full and ready to be fished.

Fisheries Queensland recreational fisheries manager Tony Ham said
the holiday season was an ideal time for families and friends to
enjoy the benefits of freshwater fishing.

“Anglers of all ages and skill levels can enjoy freshwater
fishing,” he said.

“There are 32 dams on the scheme, all open these holidays, with a
range of species available to recreational anglers.

“The dams are idyllic settings for gatherings and day trips, many
boasting barbecue areas, boat access and camping
facilities.”

Mr Ham said purchasing a SIP for a Christmas present was a simple
process, and a current competition gave more incentive for people
to purchase a permit now.

“Head to www.fisheries.qld.gov.au to purchase a permit online or
to check out where you can buy one, or call 13 25 23 to purchase
over the phone,” he said.

“If you purchase a yearly permit online or at a registered
stockist before 31 January 2012, you’ll gain automatic entry into
the competition to win one of two $250 fishing packs.

“Each prize pack contains four lures and a rod and reel
combo.

“Permits cost just $36.05 for one year or $32.40 for concession
card holders.”

Mr Ham said fishing at a SIPS dam was a sustainable fishing
option.

“Seventy-five per cent of funds from the sale of permits go to
restocking the dams with native fish species,” he said.

“This means fishers that purchase a permit get to choose where
the funds from their permit are allocated.

“Enjoy the dam fishing experience this holiday season, and don’t
forget to keep your permit on you at all times.”
